Today (August 12), the Military Court of Ground Operations Command in Yongin, Gyeonggi sentenced Seungri (BIGBANG) to 3 years in prison with a fine of 1.15 billion won after investigating 9 charges including: Using p.r.o.s.t.i.t.u.t.i.o.n services, brokering p.r.o.s.t.i.t.u.t.i.o.n, G.a.m.b.l.i.n.g, embezzling, violating Food Sanitation Act, violating Foreign Exchange Trading Act, violating the S.e.x C.r.i.m.e.s Act for spreading hidden camera content and instigating special violence.
Accordingly, the former BIGBANG member was prosecuted for brokering p.r.o.s.t.i.t.u.t.i.on for investors from Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong… from December 2015 to January 2016 in exchange for investment money for the company, nightclubs and other businesses. Seungri is also accused of appropriating about 528 million won from an investment fund and regularly g.a.m.b.l.i.n.g in Las Vegas from December 2013 to August 2017 with a total amount of up to 2.2 billion won.
A series of major Korean newspapers reported on the incident
In previous trials, Seungri repeatedly denied all charges, claiming that the business partner must be responsible for the p.r.o.s.t.i.t.u.t.i.on ring, and that he did not come to the US to g.a.m.b.l.e.
However, the Court side issued a judgement: “The defendant conspired with Yoo In Suk to repeatedly broker p.r.o.s.t.i.t.u.t.i.on for foreign investors, and profit from this. The fact that celebrities participate in g.a.m.b.l.i.n.g also has a huge impact, eroding the accurate perception of society.” The court further emphasized that “Seungri has no remorse and always blames others, despite greatly benefiting from his c.r.i.m.e.s”.
