Recently, a video posted on the Internet shows Mr Macron being slapped by a man from the crowd. The French President’s security team quickly intervened, contained the perpetrator and took Mr. Macron away.
Two people involved in the incident have been arrested.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex called the attack on the president an insult to democracy.
The situation took place when Mr. Macron made a visit to the Drome region in southeastern France, where he met with restaurant owners and students to discuss life recovering to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the video, Mr Macron walks towards the crowd standing behind a metal fence. The president raised his hand to greet a man but was slapped in the face by the man. The perpetrator of the attack was heard shouting “Montjoie Saint Denis” – a battle slogan of the French army during feudal times.
In 2016, Emmanuel Macron, when he was still France’s economy minister, was also thrown eggs by protesters during a strike against labor reforms. Two years later, “yellow vest” protesters also shouted and booed him in a situation that shocked the President.
