According to Bloomberg, Apple surprised each top developer with a bonus of up to $180,000 in shares, the equivalent of P9 million, to deter recruitment from Facebook parent Meta.
According to the story by Mark Gurman, who is known for his Apple scoops, the engineers are involved in silicon design, hardware, and select software and operations, and the bonus was on top of what they were due to receive this year.
Many of the engineers received $80,000, $100,000, or $120,000 in compensation. Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that the stock awards ranged from $50,000 to $180,000.
Apple, the creator of iPhones and Macs, is under pressure to keep employees from leaving to work for competitors. Meta is actively recruiting for its Metaverse ambitions, which Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s CEO, sees as the Internet’s future.
Google announced in December that it will give staff an extra bonus for their well-being during the pandemic and that it would push out its return to work date.
The incentives, which were unexpected by those who received them, have ranged from $50,000 to $180,000 in some circumstances. Many of the engineers were given shares for $80,000, $100,000, or $120,000.
